First off, Ed Reed was selected 24th overall by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2002 NFL Draft. He took no time making an impact. Reed started all 16 games in the 2002 season, having 5 interceptions and 71 tackles. Troy Polamalu was selected 16th overall in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started 0 games. He clocked out with 29 tackles, 2 of which were sacks, and 4 pass deflections.
Round 1: Ed Reed
In the next three seasons, Reed started 42 of 48 games, had 17 interceptions, leading the league in 2004 (9), forced four fumbles, and having a total of 156 tackles. Reed also won the AP Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2004. Troy started 45 out of 48 games, had 10 interceptions, forced 3 fumbles, and had 67 tackles, 5 of which were sacks.
Round 2: Ed Reed
Since 2007, Ed Reed led the league in interceptions twice, 2008 (9) and 2010 (8), had six pick-sixes, and 182 tackles. Troy Polamalu was the 2010 AP Defensive Player of the Year, had a combined 19 interceptions, and 232 tackles.
Round 3: Troy Polamalu
Playoffs: Ed Reed hasn't been to the Super Bowl. The closest he's gotten is the AFC Championship Game in 2008 & 2011. The Ravens have made the playoffs every year since 2008. Troy Polamalu has been to the Super Bowl three times, winning twice.
Round 4: Troy Polamalu
Ed Reed was 24 when he came into the NFL. That means he will have a shorter career than Troy. Polamalu is still in his prime, and the speed and agility he brings to the table is unheard of. Ed Reed brings a clutch role and leadership.
Overall Career: Troy Polamalu
I can't believe I'm saying this, but, Polamalu is just so risky and fast that you don't see that. These are debatably the two best safety's ever.
Top: Ed Reed
Bottom: Troy Polamalu
